Spotlight On Success - June

The Alan Corbet 2008 JazzNOW! Jazz Camp Scholarships

Since its inception in 2002, the JazzNOW! Jazz Camp has become one of the highlights of the musical calendar and an inspiring experience for many young Western Australian jazz students.

Much of the success of JazzNOW! Jazz Camp was attributed to the vision and passion of State Jazz Coordinator, Mr Alan Corbet, whose passing in March 2008 left the local jazz community in shock. Mr Corbet was responsible for the evolution of Jazz Camp over many years and in recognition of this dedication and passion, ArtsEdge and JazzWA created the Alan Corbet Jazz Camp 2008 Scholarship to be awarded to one regional Western Australian student and one metropolitan based student and covering the costs associated with attending the camp.

In late June 2008, Bronton Ainsworth of Albany and Alex De Barro of Jane Brook were selected as the 2008 Scholarship winners. Winning the scholarships enabled both students to attend the 2008 JazzNOW! Jazz Camp which was held at the WA Academy of Performing Arts July 14-17.

Jazz Camp enabled Bronton and Alex and other attending students the chance to participate in instrument masterclasses, ensemble workshops, big band workshops, improvisation classes and daily concerts presented by local, national and international jazz luminaries. The camp culminated in a concert by students for parents and friends.
