Spotlight On Success - August

Master of Manga at Fremantle Arts Centre

Manga is a style of Japanese comic which has distinctive characteristics. Artist Shane Tholen has been running classes at the Fremantle Arts Centre for two years, coaching young people in the process of drawing in this style.

Classes at Fremantle Arts Centre are run by professional, practicing artists and tutors. These short courses give young artists the opportunity to work in a professional environment and gain access to an invaluable resource. Class sizes are small and places limited, so each student gets the most out of each workshop.

Shane is running the Manga Madness workshop at Fremantle Arts Centre, specifically for high school students. With a focus on designing and building up characters for comics and Manga illustration, this course covers expressions, action poses and embellishment. Advance your techniques and create something truly original.

Shane Tholen has experience in tutoring students of all ages and has worked extensively teaching English, in Australia as well as in Japan. Shane has had his illustrations published in the children’s book ‘Groovy Granny’ (Sandcastle Press, 2003) and has worked as a freelance cartoonist for a number of years. Shane has a great enthusiasm for teaching; encouraging students to participate, share ideas and gain knowledge.

“These after school classes are a great chance to gain a different perspective on arts practices, apart from what’s offered in the school curriculum” says Jo Pickup, Education Coordinator. “Shane is a brilliant artist and a great teacher if you’re into manga and want to learn more.”
