Artists in Schools

Artists in schools programs (or Artists-in-Residence) offer new and exciting ways of teaching and learning. Students, teachers and artists can grow trhough these creative partnerships and develop new skills and understandings. The innovative aspects of many programs also have potential to draw together the differing learning areas of the Western Australian Curriculum Framework and link the classroom with the professional arts world and local community.

What is it?

Developed in conjunction with the Australia Council for the Arts, the Department of Culture and the Arts and Department of Education and Training, ArtsEdge presents a new four year pilot grants program, commencing in 2009 and open to all Western Australian public schools and teacher training institutions, professional artists, arts and cultural organisations.

The AIR initiative, referred to in Western Australia as the AIR GRANTS PROGRAM, will give artists an opportunity to broaden their experiences and share their skills while providing students with greater access to the creative development process and encourage them to consider the arts when making future career choices.

The AIR GRANTS PROGRAM will also create opportunities for artists and teachers to work together and develop effective teaching methods and practices for the arts.

Read the joint Ministers' media statement released on Tuesday June 2, 2009 here.

The AIR GRANTS PROGRAM is made up of two AIR funding STREAMS.

AIR STREAM 1: Six (6) short term artist(s)/arts organisation(s) residencies for a minimum of 30 days (commencing in Term 2 - scheduled consecutively or completed by the end of Term 3 in the school year).

AIR STREAM 2: one (1) long term (i.e. up to one school calendar year) artist in residency project by a Department of Culture and the Arts key funded arts and/or cultural organisation(s) already in partnership or offering arts education programs in WA schools. These organisations will be invited to submit applications for assessment.

Together these streams prioritise:

  • Creative processes that actively engage with young people;
  • Partnerships between schools, clusters of schools, artists and arts organisations and the wider community;
  • Innovation and 21st century technology;
  • Professional development opportunities for artists, educators and pre-service teachers;
  • Regional and remote school communities;
  • Indigenous young people
  • Young people at educational risk;
  • Disability; and
  • Cultural difference and diversity.

Successful applicants will be those that deliver one or more of these priority areas.

Applications that propose identical or similar programs to those already being undertaken in a school(s) or a teacher training institution; projects which do not directly link with the Western Australian Curriculum Framework; and/or do not address a minimum of one or more priority areas, as identified above, will not be funded.

Who can apply?

APPLICATIONS FOR 2009 ARE NOW CLOSED

In 2009 the AIR GRANTS PROGRAM invites applications from Western Australian government schools, clusters of schools or teacher training institutions only.

An AIR project must:

  • include involvement by at least one professional artist with a minimum of three (3) years experience in their art form, however the artist(s)/arts organisation(s) may work in any art form or combination of arts forms e.g. creative writing/literature, dance, design, drama, media (including new media, film, television and/or radio broadcasting), music, and/or visual arts; and

The key differences between this arts funding program and those already funded by the Department of Culture and the Arts, or other arts project sponsorship providers in this State, are:

  • the school must submit the application for funding for AIR STREAM 1 or work in collaboration with an arts organisation to submit an application for AIR STREAM 2;
  • the school must take on the role of Project Manager and appoint a staff member as Project Coordinator; and
  • The AIR project must have links to the Western Australian Curriculum Framework.

The Assessment Process

AIR STREAM 1 of the AIR GRANTS PROGRAM will be delivered through an open application process and administered by the Department of Education and Training in collaboration with the Department of Culture and the Arts.

AIR STREAM 2 will be delivered through a two-stage application process i.e. Expression of Interest and Full Proposal and will be administered by the Department of Culture and the Arts in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training.

Both funding STREAMS will use ArtsEdge as its key source of information and client liaison.

Applications for both AIR STREAMS 1 and 2 will be assessed by a panel consisting of Australia Council for the Arts, Department of Culture and the Arts and Department of Education and Training staff and external peers from the arts and education sectors. External panellists have been selected on the basis that they are free from conflict of interest pertaining to the applications and have the relevant expertise to thoroughly assess the applications.

To find out more about the 2009 panel members, please click here.

All panellists are required to observe a code of conduct of impartiality and confidentiality and undertake thorough assessment of each application. Assessment meetings will be supervised by ArtsEdge to ensure adherence to the code of conduct for assessment, however ArtsEdge staff members are not involved in the decision making.

The assessing Panel considers each application and how it meets the AIR GRANTS PROGRAM assessment criteria and priorities. With limited funding available, the Panel is often unable to support all applications that competitively address the assessment criteria.

Applicants will be sent a letter of acknowledgement within 14 (working) days of receipt of the application. In 2009, it will take approximately 6 weeks from the closing date until funding results are available. Applicants will then be advised in writing of the outcome of their submission.
