The Art of Marketing to Schools -15 April 2009

ArtsEdge hosted the first Professional Development event in 2009 for arts organisations on the 15th of April at the King Street Arts Centre. The theme of the morning was “Future Audiences Now – The art of marketing to schools”. Forty guests from the arts sector including education and marketing managers.

ArtsEdge Coordinator Karen Herrmann welcomed the attendees and introduced the first presenter Lorraine Scorer- Principal Consultant, Secondary Directorate at the Department of education and Training. Lorraine spoke about key dates for promoting to schools, the importance of establishing a teacher reference group and strategies for creating education kits.

Vanessa Peters, Principal Consultant, The Arts K-12 Curriculum Assessment and Reporting at DET gave her insight into linking to the curriculum across the learning areas and phases of development. Vanessa also provided an overview of the position of The Arts Learning area in the National Curriculum.

Lynette Moss, Senior Lecturer at Edith Cowan University presented the Early Childhood and Primary education perspective in integrating the arts in the curriculum. Lynette explained how children learn through their involvement with the arts and how multiple intelligences (cognitive, linguistic and social) are developed through experience and activity in multiple arts forms.

Industry case studies were shared by Lisa Young, Education Officer at Art on the Move and Marissa Atzemis who was contracted as Education Manager by ThinIce for their 2009 Perth International Arts Festival production of Antigone. These presenters explained the procedures they use for contacting schools, developing a package of relevant information and resources for teachers to accompany the exhibition or performance and how they get the artists, directors and actors to speak with school groups about the artworks they have experienced.

Ilsa Bennion, ArtsEdge Project Officer, provided a little of her background in working in arts education and highlighted her role in ArtsEdge in promoting and developing arts in education.  Her role and experience enables her to assist arts organisations in targeting schools audiences by suggesting links to curriculum across the learning areas and phases of development.

Two presenters from the Curriculum Council, John Kural, Assessment and Moderation Officer- the Arts  and Leanne Meldrum, Curriculum and Assessment Officer - Endorsed Programs supplied a wealth of information on the Endorsed Programs offered in schools to senior students. These programs provide year 10 -12 students with recognition of their learning in a range of exciting activities not covered by traditional school subjects or courses. John and Leanne strongly recommended to the arts organisations to apply have their programs registered.
