Professional Artist Fees

Definition of Professional

When using the word professional the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) believes that a professional artist is one that is producing new works to a high standard of expertise on a regular basis.

The DLGSC and the Department of Education, support appropriate rates of pay for artists.
Payments by schools to artists depends on the artist’s level of experience and what they intend to deliver in the school.
As a starting point, schools should consider the minimum rate it would cost a school to employ a relief teacher and negotiate this with the artist.
An art lecturer in a university may earn more than $200 per hour, depending on their experience and the type of lecture or workshop they present. While this information is helpful in providing approximate figures, many professional artists and arts organisations will have experience in quoting fees for artist-in-residence projects or putting values on their own expertise.
