Telling Tales:
Western Australian Artists-in-Schools Partnerships
The Department of Culture and the Arts launched Telling Tales: Western Australian Artists-In-Schools Partnerships on Thursday 14th June 2007 at North Perth Primary School - the site of one of the featured exciting case studies.
Telling Tales profiles twenty inspirational artists-in-schools partnerships occurring throughout Western Australia since 2004. It is intended to inspire the development of new artist-in-schools projects that will help young people make the most of their intellectual, creative and personal capacities now and into the future.
Telling Tales is designed as a companion publication to Artists in Schools: The ArtsEdge guide for artists and teachers in Western Australia 07 – 08, which arrived in schools throughout WA in Term One. Telling Tales received funding support from the Department of Education and Training, and from the Education and Art Partnership Initiative of the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body.
A hard copy of Telling Tales will be provided free-of-charge to key funded arts organisations and public schools throughout the state. In addition both Telling Tales and Artists in Schools: The ArtsEdge guide for artists and teachers in Western Australia 07-08 will also be available electronically on the ArtsEdge website at http://www.artsedge.dca.wa.gov.au.
2006 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards
Congratulations to the seven award winners chosen from a shortlist of thirty four (selected from a record 155 entries!) announced on Friday June 8 at the State Library of Western Australia.
Celebrating in the Children's Books Category was Shaun Tan for The Arrival - a remarkable story told through exquisite illustration which also took out the Premier's Prize. In Young Adult's Books the award went to Kate McCaffrey for Destroying Avalon which explores cyber bullying and the associated impact on today's young people. Check out the full list of awards and the Judges report here.
Congratulations Steps Youth Dance Company!
The highly acclaimed BOYS CAN DANCE program celebrated 10 YEARS of unearthing talented young male dancers in Perth with a high energy, high impact original new dance-theatre work titled dash held at the Playhouse Theatre over the 13th - 17th June.
A celebration of life, love, loss and grief, dash is a dynamic and wistful dance piece that explores the universal themes of family, and the impact that the unexpected death of Sam, the beloved grandfather, has on the lives of a young boy and his brothers.
dash was performed by thirty young males of various ages and backgrounds and gave company members the experience of intensive workshops and detailed rehearsals culminating in a season of public performances. By providing access to positive role models, the project gave the young male performers a clear understanding of how contemporary dance and music can be used as effective forms of communication.
The artistic team included choreographers Alice Holland, Shona Erskine and emerging choreographer Richard Cilli. Music by Kingsley Reeve, Video Design by Ashley de Prazer, Lighting by Andrew Lake and Costumes by Isaac Lummis with the team working under the direction of STEPS’ Artistic Director, Danielle Micich.

ASME 2007 Conference
Just around the corner, 6 - 10 July at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. The theme for the ASME 2007 Fortieth Anniversary Conference is 'Celebrating Musical Communities'. This theme reflects the interdependency of music, music education and the broader community. It recognizes and rejoices in the richness of musical life in modern society and allows us to bridge traditional gaps. You will be encouraged to listen to and understand vibrant musical cultures, from our indigenous heritage to the newer immigrant cultures, and to examine the values and processes of fusion. A major Forum will look at the recently completed National Review into School Music and throw light on the current state of our profession and its possible directions. No musical community is excluded, and no national boundaries are given importance. A strong input is expected from surrounding Indian Ocean and South-east Asian countries. More information online!
