enews #6 2007
jingle bells... jingle bells...
OK so perhaps we are getting a little bit ahead of ourselves... but we are one week down into term four already and before we know it... it'll be time for some festive cheer!
Firstly... a very big welcome to Elaine Lyons who has come on board until the beginning of November to work alongside Fiona on the all new artsamazing semester 1 08! we've got the low down on a whole bunch of amazing events and activities coming up next year... and while we are currently in the cone of silence - come the 26th November they'll be in schools and being booked out fast! Elaine joins us on her travels around Australia (she's from Ireland and a sensational singer and dancer!) and is plowing through the heaps of entries that you'll have to choose from. Hooray for Elaine and hooray for our arts organisations!
Secondly - 'tis the season to be LAUNCHING! After a side splitting launch from Barking Gecko Theatre Company featuring Improvilicious on Thursday 20th September, the Perth International Arts Festival launched its extensive new education program on Wednesday 17th October. Coming up soon we have 2008 Education Program Launches from Black Swan Theatre Company and Buzz Dance Theatre amongst others... for more details call the companies directly!
While there's lots more breaking news to follow, The Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training & Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) has endorsed and released their National Statement on Education and the Arts which has been jointly authorised and published by the Cultural Ministers Council. The Statement is underpinned by three key principles:
with all of these being fantastic recognition of what is happening for, with and by our arts, cultural and education sectors throughout Western Australia. Ready... set... let's go!!! ArtsEdge HQ.

Nerdstock! 2 - 3 November @ Scitech
It’s official! Nerds are cool and Geek is chic.
To celebrate, Scitech is hosting Nerdstock, a festival that embraces the wonderful things about science and technology, while blending it with elements of art; in an unlikely but fitting combination. This unique event will see every area of Scitech on 2 and 3 November support an abundance of contemporary dance and music performances, demonstrations, talks, hilarious comedy, and unusual technology based art projects. There will be terrific hands on activities and workshops to take part in, and plenty of ways for you to express your scientific and creative sides at once. Make your own nerd costume, learn about animation or create artwork using robots.
It's showtime! AWESOME unveils 2007 Festival program!
AWESOME Arts Australia has officially launched its 2007 AWESOME Festival program, showcasing diverse, whimsical and thought-provoking acts from France, Taiwan, New Zealand and Melbourne. The 2007 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things is on from 16 – 25 November. “We don’t aim to ‘theme’ the festival from year to year, however some commonalities have emerged from the 2007 festival,” said Jenny Simpson, AWESOME General Manager. “There is a distinctive entwining of art and technology, interweaving social issues, aesthetic concerns and collaborative production.” Baby Love (Taiwan) is reminiscent of childhood fairground rides which gently spin and bounce off other teacups. It harnesses wi-fi technology to shuffle, exchange and remix love songs with the bump to the beat of the installation's soundtrack. Dr Egg and the Man with No Ear (Melbourne) is a bio-ethical fable which playfully explores the ethical dilemmas society faces as new developments are made in the field of genetics and cloning. Glow by Melbourne’s Chunky Move delivers another cutting-edge performance, using the motion of the human body to trigger and control music, lighting and animation. 2007 marks the 12th AWESOME Festival, with BHP Billiton Nickel West stepping into the role of principal partner. Check out information on the full festival program and workshops online!

West Australian Opera joins OZ OPERA for Carmen!
Unrequited love, passion, jealousy – the foundations of opera have never been so magnificently portrayed as they have in Bizet's Carmen. After 5 weeks of traveling all over Western Australia with Carmen, West Australian Opera artists Jennifer Barrington, James Clayton and Tommaso Pollioare pleased to be back home and are already busy rehearsing for the upcoming season of La Boheme. Audiences in Western Australia had the opportunity to experience Oz Opera's specially-adapted touring version of Carmen in their communities throughout August and September 2007 with the production visiting Kununurra, Derby, Port Hedland, Newman, Karratha, Carnarvon, Geraldton, Moora, Mandurah, Margaret River, Bunbury, Borden (in a HAYSHED to an audience of over 600 people!), Esperance, Kalgoorlie and Perth! During the tour the crew performed for many primary schools with the West Australian Opera artists performing as part of the off stage chorus. This venture has been a first for West Australian Opera, contributing not only financially but also by sharing the talent of these wonderful artists. It’s back to the drawing board now to see where we can take this wonderful new initiative. Oz Opera is the touring arm of Opera Australia. Oz Opera performs in communities both large and small across Australia, and gives many people of all ages their first experience of opera, and aims to inspire and engage with adult and student audiences in Australia, beyond the mainstage programs in Melbourne and Sydney.
